The End of Caption Craziness
One of the early things we did here at the blog was caption craziness. I’d post a picture and then we’d try to come up with as many humorous comments as we could. Sometimes it worked, other times it did not. After about a year, we discontinued Caption Craziness. However, in honor of the 7th biggest story of 2011 I’ve decided to revive (for one day only) Caption Craziness.
Let’s see what we can do with this one:

Was Rudolph Bullied?
A CW Post professor sure thinks so and he wrote a book about it. In the book, he charges that Rudolph had to go through unnecessary taunting because of his red nose. Furthermore, Santa did nothing about it.
Critics point out that Rudolph eventually becomes a integral figure in the story and everyone turns out to love the red-nosed reindeer.
Check out the article here.
What do you think? Are we too sensitive? Does the author have a good point?
I can see the professor’s point. However, I think the story also shows how someone has to cope with the negative behaviors so that he/she can be strong enough to overcome the mean actions of others.
I do agree that we shouldn’t be bystanders and that adults should come to the aid of those being bullied.
I don’t think (I hope) that young kids do not take their cues from fictional cartoon characters and instead listen to their teachers and parents.

The reigning National League MVP Joey Votto has a chance to have a better season this year than last year. Despite his better numbers, he is not a candidate to be MVP this year. The difference? The Reds aren’t winning. Hats off to Votto for making this a watchable season. I shudder to think about what this season would have been like without Votto.
This has happened to the Reds in the past. Barry Larkin’s best season was 1996, the year after he won the NL MVP.

I just finished another book. This one again had an educational focus. In fact, the book is called Focus. The main idea of the book is that teachers need to spend more time reading, writing and discussing ideas in class rather than doing fancy schmancy techniques in the classroom. Too often we try to dazzle with fun and exciting activities but at the end of the day we aren’t actually learning. I think we do a lot of reading and writing and discussing in Social Studies but perhaps I will focus on this a bit more. I’ve said many times that school is not a trip to the circus. While I don’t want my classes to be bored, I’m not an entertainer. School is for learning and is not a night at the Chucklehut.
More reading and writing means students will be better prepared for college and beyond. That’s what I want from all of my students.

Check Out This Triple Play

I once had a ball bounce off of my head at 1st Base (that explains a lot) but I wasn’t able to make a triple play out of it. I guess I can go with the tired “That’s Using Your Head” line for this video? Any other comments we could make about the play?
I guess we can call this the temporary return of Caption Craziness.

Reds vs. Yankees Double Header today. That’s a lot of baseball!

Here’s a link to the attendance averages this year that was discussed in a previous post.

Congratulations to the 8th Grade students that received awards at the 8th Grade Awards Ceremony. Your hard work continues to pay off. From the names of the recipients that I heard yesterday, I can’t say that I am surprised by some of the winners. I also heard that scores on the Regents Exams and Social Studies Benchmark were very good. Keep up the great work next year and beyond.

We have a half day today. Only periods 7, 8 and 9 are meeting. That doesn’t mean that we aren’t going to be learning because we are. If the district didn’t want us to be doing school work, we would be given the day off. I hope to see you in school.

More Caption Craziness…

Actually it isn’t exactly a caption but Newsday is running a similar contest in their newspaper.
Here’s the cartoon. All you have to do is come up with a clever “punchline” and the winning selection will be printed in an upcoming paper. We have some clever people here so let’s see what we can come up with and then perhaps we’ll encourage our best to post it on newsday.com
