Supreme Court Case

Schools Can Search Student Cars Based On Reasonable Grounds
This case hasn’t made it to the United States Supreme Court yet, although I fully expect that to happen eventually.
As we discussed in class yesterday, a lot of your rights as students are left at the door when you enter school.

Extra Help Rescheduled
The extra help originally scheduled for today has been rescheduled. It doesn’t make much sense to have an extra help session today and not a day or two before our test.

Did You Know?
You would have to count to one thousand to use the letter “A” in the English language to spell a whole number.

This Day In History
1848-The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was ratified by the United States Senate, ending the Mexican War and adding another piece to the United States quest for land “from sea to shining sea.”
1864-Ulysses S. Grant becomes Commander of the Union Armies during the Civil War
1876-The first successful voice transmission over Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone took place in Boston as his assistant heard Bell say, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want you.” What would we do without telephones today? Some people can’t even go 5 minutes without looking at their phones and calling someone, texting, etc.
Today’s Birthdays include Carrie Underwood and Chuck Norris (I can almost hear some of the students beginning their Chuck Norris vs. Jack Bauer debate).
It also would have been the birthday of Lilian Wald, head of the Henry St. settlement house, created to help immigrants and the poor with health care and English and other things. You’ll learn about her next year. It also would be the birthday of James Earl Ray, the guy who killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ironically enough, it is also the day that he pleaded guilty to that murder. Given the crime, it seems to be a fitting birthday present.

Midweek already!

A great website on the Electoral College. Check it out.

Did I ever tell you what my ringtone would be if I had a cell phone…

Chris, I’m not sure if I want to know…
But I only turn my cell phone on in the first place to call my parents to pick me up.

What happend this morning? When I came into school today, no teachers were there. Someone said that they were outside, all wearing black. Would a person that was there (a teacher) care to explain? Thanks.
    How’s DJ doing?

The “Did You Know?” for today was very interesting; I can’t believe that I never realized that. I am very glad to hear that we will be having Extra Help for the test. I think that I forgot everything over winter vacation. But enough studying will probably help me to do well on the test. Iliana, the reason that the teachers were wearing black is because they do not have a contract for next year. They are all wearing the same color to show that they are one team. Well, that is what I heard.

…and they are following their contracts exactly now. That’s why they came in at exactly 8:00.

    I want to know Chris!!!!!!

Although, this does seem completely random.

The teachers were protesting the lack of a new contract for this year. We haven’t had a new agreement since July 1.

  7. Comment by Emily on March 10, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Don’t like this contract because if you are in early to help your students and you are helping your students should it be a benifit to the Board of Education!!!!!! Who agrees with me????

  8. Comment by Emily on March 10, 2010 at 4:21 pm

But if you are protesting now doesn’t your contract be for next school year because the school year is almost over anyway??!!

  9. Comment by Mr. Dowling on March 10, 2010 at 4:45 pm

The teachers aren’t far from doing the minimum they are required to do. If that were the case, students wouldn’t be in teachers’ classrooms during lunch or we wouldn’t bring in snacks such as cookies or giving extra-extra help or maintaining a website or…I think you get the point.
The last thing the teachers would want to do is hurt the students. We got into teaching to help you and we will continue to do that. We just hope to be rewarded with a fair contract for all that we are doing.

Contracts can be retroactive, meaning they can go back to the past and cover all of the time over the past several months as well as the future.

  11. Comment by Emily on March 10, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Wait so you are saying that this protest thing will take awhile????

  12. Comment by Elizabeth on March 10, 2010 at 5:31 pm

I actually knew the “Did you know?” for today. I didn’t believe it until I actually thought about it for awhile. And Chris, I am not sure if I want to know, but I’ll take a guess: Is is the Simpsons theme song? And I really hope that the contract thing gets sorted out because if not, we would have no 7:30 extra help for the S.S. test! That’s Vin Diesel? I see no resemblance whatsoever! Have you actually been asked for an autograph before?

  13. Comment by Wyn on March 10, 2010 at 6:07 pm

I’m not saying that you were doing the minimum possible……….but wasn’t that the point this morning?

    I kinda do see a resemblence……..

  14. Comment by Sameer on March 10, 2010 at 6:22 pm

No ofense Mr. Dowling, but I don’t a resemblence between you and Vin Diesel.

  15. Comment by Iliana on March 10, 2010 at 8:02 pm

I agree with Emily, once again. And I think that the Board of Education is being really stubborn and annoying. But that’s just my opinion.

  16. Comment by Elizabeth on March 10, 2010 at 8:45 pm

I agree Iliana; These Board of Education people better get their heads glued on straight because they obviously aren’t aware of how hard our teachers work, for our benefit. I admire all the teachers for protesting.

  17. Comment by Iliana on March 11, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Oh, and I definitely do not see a resemblance between Mr. Dowling and that guy. How do people see it? I don’t! Not even at a quick glance!
