Mr. Dowling
The First Americans

How did people first reach the Americas?
The first Americans left no written records to tell us where they came from or when they first arrived.
Scientists have found evidence to suggest that the first people reached the Americas some time during the Ice Age.
The last ice age occurred between 100,000 and 10,000 years ago.
Glaciers(thick sheets of ice) covered nearly 1/3 of the Earth. The glaciers locked up water from the oceans. As a result, sea levels fell and uncovered land.
A land bridge joined Siberia in Northeastern Asia to Alaska in North America. This land bridge is known as Beringia
People crossed the land bridge because they were following the animals.
