The Continental Congress set up a committee to write a Declaration of Independence. The committee assigned Thomas Jefferson to write the document.

The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

What ideas did the Declaration of Independence include?

People have certain rights that a government cannot take away. (Locke) The rights are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
When a government doesn't protect the rights of its citizens, the people have the right to change the government.
